What Is Asbestos Fiber?
Asbestos fiber is serpentinite and hornblende series inorganic mineral fiber. It is mainly composed of hydrated magnesium silicate (3MgO·3SiO2·2H2O).
Properties of Asbestos Fiber
Asbestos fiber is heat resistant, non-ignitable, water resistant, acid resistant and chemical resistant. There are more than 30 types asbestos fiber. But there are 3 types that are commonly used in industry, as chrysotile asbestos, chrysotile asbestos and iron asbestos. Asbestos is carcinogenic. There is a risk of cancer mesothelioma and lung cancer in an environment with heavy asbestos dust. Therefore, when working with asbestos, protection measures should be taken.
(1) The specific density and bulk weight are smaller. The average specific density is 2.75 and the unit weight is 1600~2200 kg/m3. It is a very good light weight material.
(2) The thermal conductivity is low. The heat conductivity coefficient is 0.198~0.244W(m·K).
(3) The electric conductivity is low. Its life is longer than cast iron pipe. It has high mechanical strength and can bear great pressure. It is a good electrical insulating material.
(4) It is easy to cut and process. It can be chiseled through with nails, which is very similar to wood.
(5) It has stable chemical property. Although it cannot be acid resistant, it lasts longer in mineral water than concrete pipes
