How to Recover the Shrinking Clothing?

Some clothes will shrink after washed. The shrinking clothing is less comfortable and less beautiful. But why does the clothing shrink?

That is because that during washing process of clothing, the fiber will absorb water and expand. And the diameter of fiber will enlarge. So the thickness of clothing will increase. After dried, because of the friction between fibers, the clothing is difficult to restore to its original form and its area is reduced, which leads to shrinking of clothing. The shrinkage of clothing is closely related to raw materials, yarn thickness, fabric density and production process, etc. Generally speaking, shrinkage of natural fibers is higher than that of chemical fibers. The thicker the yarn is, the large the shrinkage rate will be. And the higher the density is, the more easily it will shrink. In addition, it also depends on that whether the clothing has been shrunk during production. There are two methods as following.

1.High temperature restoring method
For shrinking clothing, firstly please wet it with hot water or steam to expand the fibers and soften or remove the animal fiber scale layer or reduce the cohesive force between plant fibers, so as to reduce the friction between fibers, and then please stretch it by external forces to restore it. During stretching, the force should be moderate, not too large, so as not to cause deformation of the clothing.
 
2.Restoring by washing
Irreversible friction of fibers is the main cause of shrinkage of clothing. The key to restore the clothing is to reduce friction between fibers, except for silk clothes. We can reduce friction by adding acid detergent and soaking for about 30 minutes, and then lay the clothing flat on a towel of the same color or pure white color, and pull the clothing by hand to restore the clothing. The pulling force should not be too big in case of deformation of clothing. Finally, please wrap the clothing in a towel and roll them up to gently wring out the moisture, and then lay them out flat to dry.
 
After restoring, the shrinking clothing still cannot recover its flatness and comfort. To ensure the long-term use of clothing, we should buy clothes in regular stores. When washing the clothing, choose the correct washing method according to the wash label. For clothing that will shrink easily, please avoid washing by high temperature. For wool clothes, they should be washed by dry clean. For cotton clothes, it is recommended to wash by hand.
