Fabric count is a way to express yarn, which is expressed as “s” by length based system.
The higher the count is, the yarn will be finer, the fabric will be softer and smoother and the relative price will be higher. However, fabric count has no necessary relation with fabric quality.
The concept of count is more applicable to worsted fabrics than to woollen fabrics. For example, Harris Tweed has very low count.
Count is the most important indicator to measure the quality of fabric. That is the more the count is, the finer the yarn will be. The diameter of 250s wool can be up to 11 micrometer. Fabric woven by finer yarns will have more exquisite and more delicate handle.
Because of high density, fabric with high count can be water-proof. For example, if red wine, tea and juice, etc. is spill on cloth, the liquid will not penetrate into fabric, but roll on the fabric only. So high-count fabric is suitable for making functional cloth.
However, if the yarn is too thin, it will be easily break, which is difficult for production. The fabric that woven by 100~300s yarns is the popular high-end fabric in the market. In simple terms, the quality of fabric is not directly related to the count of fabric. But fabric with higher count is more delicate and softer and has higher density and better water-proof performance.
