After being treated at high temperature, thermal migration will occur on polyester dyed by disperse dyes.

 

Influences of Thermal Migration of Disperse Dyes

1.Color shade will change.
2.Rubbing fastness will decrease.
3.Fastness to washing and perspiration will decrease.
4.Color fastness to sunlight will decrease.
5.Color fastness to dry washing will decrease.
6.It will cause staining on other fabric during ironing.

Reasons of Thermal Migration of Disperse Dyes

Thermal migration is a redistribution phenomenon of disperse dyes in two-phase solution (fiber and auxiliary). Under the condition of high temperature or long-time storage, the dye is dissolved by the auxiliary remaining in the outer layer of the fiber, and then the dye moves to the fiber surface.

Residue auxiliaries on fibers generally comes from:

1.Spinning oil and anti-static agent, etc. added during spinning or weaving
2.Various kinds of auxiliaries, as scouring agent and softener, etc. added during dyeing and finishing process
Residual nonionic surfactants will be easier to cause thermal migration of dyes.

PS:

1.There is no absolute relation between the fastness to sublimation and thermal migration of disperse dyes
2.The thermal migration of disperse dyes with different structures is different under the same conditions.

 Prevention of Thermal Migration of Disperse Dyes

1.Please remove the spinning oil (auxiliaries) added during spinning or weaving.
2.Please wash off the auxiliaries in pretreatment process and dyeing process.
3.Please have a test of thermal migration property before choosing finishing agent.

Detection of Thermal Migration in Fabrics

At room temperature, please put the dyed fabric into the dimethylformamide (DMF) solvent for 3 minutes. And the dyes that migrate to the fabric surface will fall off in the dimethylformamide. The amount of shedding dyes can determine the degree of thermal migration of disperse dyes in the fabric.
